Balboa Park:  Naast wandelpaden, tuinen, vijvers en fonteinen bevat dit culturele stadspark musea, bioscopen en de wereldberoemde San Diego Zoo. Tot de musea behoren het San Diego Air & Space Museum, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Automotive Museum en het San Diego Natural History Museum. In het prachtige Casa de Balboa, dat er alleen al van buitenkant indrukwekkend uitziet, zijn het Museum of Photographic Arts, Model Railroad Museum en het San Diego History Center gevestigd.
San Diego Zoo:  De San Diego Zoo is een van de grootste en nog steeds groeiende dierentuinen ter wereld. In totaal vind je er meer dan vierduizend dieren, zoals pandaberen, ijsberen en apen. Om het park en het enorme aanbod aan dieren overzichtelijk te houden, zijn de dieren ingedeeld naar de continenten of gebieden waar ze vandaan komen. Een ander dierenpark is het San Diego Zoo Safari Park, waar je op safari kunt gaan.
Mary, a 46-year-old female Asian elephant, took advantage of a sunny San Diego day to take a dip in a 137,000-gallon pool in her new home, The Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey. Looking on were three of her eight herd mates, Cha Cha, Ranchipur and Cookie. The elephant exhibit includes gentle rolling hills, drinking water sources and mechanical trees that provide foraging opportunities to keep the elephants active, shade and showers or heat as needed. The 7.5-acre Elephant Odyssey opened in May 2009, featuring more than 30 animal species and providing visitors with educational information about animals that are extinct and their living counterparts that are threatened with the same fate. Asian elephants are an endangered species.
